12" / 30.4 cm diameter explosion proof axial fan for confined spaces. This fan model is equipped with a 12" / 30.4 cm diameter flexible duct with hard spring steel wire helix by 25 feet / 7.62 m long. The flexible duct is stored in a removable rigid compartment that is connected to the fan by quick clips. This fan, also known as a blower, can both extract (purge) or ventilate a confined space depending on the orientation chosen by the user.
Allegro Industries manufacturer's code: 9548-25
Meets Class I, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups C and D, and Class II, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups F and G requirements for hazardous locations.
In practice, stale gases are extracted first, then a reading is taken with a gas detector equipped with a sampling pump (see DETEC4GC) and if all is correct, the fan is reversed to push fresh air into the confined space. Because of the hazards of explosive vapours or particles in this confined space, be sure to equip your workers with gas detectors, even if you have purged and vented the confined space.
The housing is made of lightweight polyethylene and is resistant to corrosion, UV light and most chemicals. This compact blower is super quiet according to the manufacturer. However, it recommends wearing hearing protection for people near the blower in its instruction manual. The blower has six polypropylene blades, a powdered steel grill and a carrying handle moulded into the blower. This fan also features a single-phase UL/CSA compliant explosion-proof electric motor and a 115 V NEMA plug that must be used with an explosion-proof outlet (RA9503-03 sold separately).
Bottom housing provides safe and convenient storage of electrical components. The quick-connect clip system allows workers to secure the conduit compartment without tools. This makes it easy to switch to exhaust or ventilation mode quickly.

Has a metal rod for grounding at each end. It is vital to follow the grounding instructions for this conduit in the manufacturer's manual. See also the comment below.
CAUTION: Explosion-proof fans require an explosion-proof receptacle RA9503-03 sold separately for motors powered by 120 volts AC, 60 Hz.
Installation Tips:
The manufacturer recommends that the fan be installed more than 5 feet away from the hole entrance. To choose the safest location for you. Ensure the wind is flowing in the right direction. When venting the place, so that the fumes disperse with the help of the wind without it returning to you. In the same way during the ventilation, place the blower with your back to the wind. This way you will avoid gas mixtures expelled from the enclosed space.
Grounding Tips:
After reviewing the instruction manual, we need to add more information to clarify grounding concepts. When equipment is used in explosive environments, it is essential to ensure excellent grounding. The slightest spark and it's a disaster.
First of all, it should be added that the photo of the explosion proof ventilation ducting the manufacturer failed to show that there is 1 ground wire at each end. There is one that can be used to connect another conduit of the same type to increase the length of the conduit. To do this. You will need to use the conduit connector (RACONN-12) and attach each conduit ground wire to the end of the nearest connector, so that the conduit connector is inserted into the grounded components.
Also, the picture of the product does not correspond to what is indicated in the instruction manual on page 7. On this page it is difficult to understand that the grounding wire of the ducting (RA9550X-25) must be connected to a bolt located on the side of the box a few cm from the grille. Connecting in this way provides continuity between the duct(s) and the fan.
To obtain a ground, all the equipment connected together must have electrical continuity that ultimately leads to the ground. This requires zero or very low ohmic resistance if it is a very long distance. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that a competent electrician has verified that all equipment connected to the fan, from the end of the duct, the fan, the extension wires, the explosion-proof plug and finally the electrical panel, is properly grounded.
In practice, it is not uncommon for decontamination companies to add a second ground. To do this, they wrap a conductive cable around the ventilation ducts, connect it to the motor frame and finally connect it to a steel stake that they plant directly in the ground. Again, this must be done by a competent electrician.
Other equipment frequently used with this blower:
- Confined Space Harness (FPH2000APLE)
- Harness storage bag (FPBAG)
- Tool attachment strap (FPL9900)
- Tripod, Lifeline and Winch Kit (FPLRK3)
- Manhole Barrier (EPTBB)
- Manhole guard (EPTBBT)
- MSA 4-gas detector and accessory kit (DETEC4GC)
- Explosion proof and weatherproof extension cord 15 A, 125 Volts (RA9540-50EX)
How to select your blower.
In order to choose the right fan, we suggest you use the application developed by Allegro Industries. This application will allow you to select the right fan based on the specific parameters of your enclosed space. To know.
- Dangerousness of the gas, explosive or not
- The size and shape of the space, its volume
- The number of elbows in the duct installation
- And much more...
We suggest that you first read the user's guide for this application (in English only) which you will find at the following Internet address: https://www.allegrosafety.com/how-to-use-our-confined-space-blower-selector/.
Then, you can go directly to the application and download it on your computer or even on your smartphone: https://www.allegrosafety.com/blower-selector/.
