At Sylprotec, we are proud of our dedicated and experienced team. Our technicians are thoroughly trained and know all the requirements necessary to meet the safety criteria of relevant authorities. Moreover, they know and believe in the importance of a personalized approach to answer each customer’s specific needs.

If you have just moved into a new building, Sylprotec offers an upgrade service: installing a sufficient number of portable fire extinguishers of the appropriate type for the existing fire hazards, all while respecting recommended travel distances to reach a fire extinguisher. This upgrade service can also be extended to other essential safety equipments, such as safety signs, first aid kits, eye wash stations, etc.

Sylprotec does not ask its customers to sign long-term contracts – or indeed, any contracts at all! We trust our commitment to great service to be our guarantee, as we keep our customers satisfied year after year.

In addition, if you wish to learn more about fire extinguishers, we have established several years ago a training class on manipulating fire extinguishers and recognizing fire hazards. Please see the Training section for more details.

Services for fire hoses

Sylprotec offers complete inspection and servicing of fire hoses in the Greater Montreal area. Our servicing section is intended primarily for company managers, building managers, and for interested individuals.

If you are responsible for the security of your company or of your building, you're doubtlessly wondering to whom to entrust the annual maintenance of your fire hoses.

At Sylprotec, we have a dedicated and experienced team. Our technicians are thoroughly trained and know all the requirements necessary to meet the safety criteria of relevant authorities. Moreover, they know and believe in the importance of a personalized approach to answer each customer’s specific needs.

Sylprotec can perform check-ups annually or more frequently, according to your needs. In general, fire hose inspections are often paired with portable fire extinguisher inspections, since these two devices are often paired together in fire cabinets. A fire cabinet typically includes a fire hose on a reel or rack, a horizontal valve to supply water to the fire hose, and a fire extinguisher.

During an inspection, our technicians will proceed to methodically inspect and take inventory your fire hoses. They will ensure the fire hoses are easily accessible, that the length of the fire hoses is appropriate, and that the nozzle of the fire hose is closed. They will also look for perforations along the hose and ensure the hose does not contain any stagnant water.

If needed, the technicians will temporarily remove some fire hoses in order to perform hydrostatic testing on them, according to NFPA 1962 standards. Fire hose hydrostatic testing must first be performed 5 years after a hose's manufacturing date, then every 3 years thereafter. When performing a hydrostatic test, the fire hose nozzle must sometimes be removed then re-mated with the hose. If the remaining length of the fire hose is no longer adequate, the entire fire hose will have to be replaced.

If you allow it, our technicians will also inspect other safety equipment during their visit, such as:

- Portable fire extinguishers;
- First aid kits;
- Emergency lighting units;
- Emergency showers and eyewash stations.

They can also install fire hose accessories such as:

- Trinal spanner keys;
- Fire hose water stops;
- High-visibility fire hose covers;
- Horizontal, vertical or circular racks and reels;
- Plugs for outdoor pipes;
- Safety signs to indicate the location of the fire hoses and/or of the fire service connectors (siamese connections);
- Other safety equipment.

If you have a large inventory of fire hoses, you will be pleased to receive our detailed inspection reports. Detailed reports allow you to better estimate recurring costs related to fire hoses, such as the cost of hydrostatic testing or the cost of replacing old fire hoses.

Sylprotec does not ask its customers to sign long-term contracts – or indeed, any contracts at all! We trust our commitment to great service to be our guarantee for returning customers, keeping them satisfied year after year.

Services for fall protection equipment (safety harnesses and lanyards)

Determined to offer as much after-sale support as possible, Sylprotec now offers an inspection service for some fall protection equipment. This service is directed to health and safety managers, inspection officers, and any individuals interested in improving their safety equipment inspection program.

Sylprotec is certified for inspecting safety harnesses and safety lanyards. For other types of fall protection equipment, we will refer to the specific manufacturers concerned, especially 3M and North Safety (Honeywell).

Before beginning an inspection program, it is important to know that the worker must inspect his or her safety harness, lanyard and all other safety equipment before beginning to work at heights. All equipment that has been subjected to an impact or a fall must be immediately rendered unusable. But what else is there to know?

The frequency at which the fall protection equipment must be inspected varies according to the working conditions and to the level of experience of some workers. It is strongly recommended to perform monthly inspections for the equipment of workers that come in contact with particulates, vapors, liquids, UV rays, or excessive heat. This inspection must be performed by a competent person that is different from the usual wearer of the fall protection equipment.

RECOMMENDED frequencies of inspection FOR FALL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT

1. Safety harnesses and lanyards :

• On top of regular basic inspections, they must be inspected by a competent person other than the usual wearer. This inspection must include a written report.

2. Type 1 retractable lanyards (shorter than 3 meters or 10 feet) :

• On top of regular basic inspections, they must be inspected by a competent person other than the usual wearer. This inspection must include a written report.
•Type1 retractables require no annual factory recertification.

3. Type 2 retractable lanyards (longer than 3 meters or 10 feet) :

• On top of regular basic inspections, they must be inspected by a competent person other than the usual wearer. This inspection must include a written report.
• Inspect yearly by the manufacturer or its equivalent, with written report.
• A maximum of 2 years is allowed before a lanyard or lifeline is used for the first time, counting from the manufacture date printed on its label.

4. Type 3 retractable lanyards (longer than 3 meters or 10 feet with recovery mechanism) :

• On top of regular basic inspections, they must be inspected by a competent person other than the usual wearer. This inspection must include a written report.
• Inspect yearly by the manufacturer or its equivalent, with written report.
• A maximum of 2 years is allowed before a lanyard or lifeline is used for the first time, counting from the manufacture date printed on its label.

5. Other fall protection equipment (hoists, winches, tripods, etc.) :

• On top of regular basic inspections, they must be inspected monthly by a competent person other than the usual wearer. This inspection must include a written report.
• Inspect yearly by a third party, with written report.

Employers must therefore keep a detailed log book of all inspection dates and results for each fall protection item. This log book will also allow managers to plan for incoming inspection dates and to continue to instruct workers on the use of their fall protection equipments.

During an inspection, our technician proceeds to carefully inspect your material according to criteria established by the manufacturer. A written inspection report is also included, and we also keep a copy in our files. A harness inspection report sheet contains as many as 22 inspection criteria, grouped in 3 levels of importance.

• A single anomaly for a level 1 or 2 criterion means that the fall protection item must be immediately rendered unusable.
• An anomaly for a level 3 criterion means that a note to that effect will be included in the written report.

If there is no competent person available to inspect your fall protection equipment when you need them, remember that Sylprotec is always ready to help!
