This 300-denier oxford polyester safety wear has been lined with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to provide water-resistance. The manufacturer grants this product a waterproof rating of 10,000 mm, i.e. it can withstand the pressure of a 10 m water column. A waterproof rating is granted when a material has been tested under the pressure of a cylinder filled with water, in this case, 10 m high of water. This height defines the limit at which the material stops being resistant and water starts passing through.
All seams have been taped and heat-sealed. The coat was also fully mesh-lined for more comfort. This coat is ideal for everyday work, even in extreme conditions as it is perfectly watertight. It is recommended for any worker surrounded by motorized vehicles: construction workers, white collars, drivers, transport workers, etc.
Reflective stripes and visibility:
This water-resistant coat has been provided with silver retroreflective stripes surrounded by fluorescent yellow stripes. Each one of them has a width of 50 mm (2 in.). This raincoat has two front vertical stripes, back X-shaped stripes, one horizontal stripe around the waist, and one stripe around each arm.
Fluorescent yellow (or that safety greenish yellow) is quite visible during daylight and in poor natural light conditions, e.g. at dawn or dusk. In most cases, this yellow ensures a high contrast with most backgrounds. Since bright yellow is lighter than orange, it can be perceived more easily at night, yet reflective stripes will always be best in the dark.
Fluorescent orange is quite visible during daylight and in bright artificial lighting conditions. In most cases, it ensures a high contrast with most backgrounds. However, bright orange is less visible at night and in poor lighting conditions, be it natural or artificial, e.g. at dawn or dusk.
Silver retroreflective stripes are the most visible there is in poor lighting conditions, be it natural or artificial, since they reflect the light toward the light source (flashlight, automotive headlamp, etc.). Therefore, they offer greater protection at dawn, dusk, and night. Reflective bands won’t, however, increase visibility during daylight.
Design:
The wide style of this coat allows one to easily wear warm clothes underneath while still allowing a good airflow. It features two inner linings which were sewn together: the lining on the upper back consists of mesh polyester whereas the rest of the coat is lined with woven polyester. It features an inner mesh pocket which is protected by a flap equipped with a hook and loop placket. This raincoat features a full front single slider plastic zipper fully protected by a hook and loop flap. Six vents at the front were included in the design to ensure breathability. It also features two flap-protected front pockets. Both sleeves may be adjusted with the hook and loop band they feature for a tight fit. The hood which is included may be removed and snapped on again as needed. This coat is not flame-resistant.
This PVC lined oxford polyester raincoat is said to be manufactured with a 300-deniers yarn; in layman’s terms, it is a medium-weight coat which is lightweight enough to offer comfort but is heavyweight enough to offer an effective protection. By definition, 300 deniers refer to the weight in grams of 9,000 m of the yarn used to make this coat, that is, 300 deniers equal 300 g. The manufacturer, Pioneer®, is unable to provide the polyurethane liner’s thickness.
Regarding the oxford term, it refers to the type of woven fabric. The oxford cloth is widely used in the industry, namely to manufacture dress shirts, coats, bags, etc. The oxford weaving consists in interlacing a warp thread (horizontal line) and a weft thread (vertical line) to create the oxford’s infamous basket weave structure.
The advantage in having a PVC coating is that it ensures a perfect waterproofing even with high winds. PVC pushes away water allowing workers to go about their business without having concerns about water leaking through their coat. PVC is, however, heavier than polyurethane, it is not breathable, and it hardens in colder weather.
Water-resistance:
The airtightness of this coat comes from its double sewn, taped and heat-sealed seams. PVC-lined waterproof safety wear is usually worn by workers who may be exposed to remote or moderate risks of chemical splashes. PVC is a thermoplastic polymer which offers resistance to chemicals, oils, greases, acids, alkalies, solvents, oxidants, and ozone. PVC is also resistant to wear and tear, and stretching.
PVC-coated clothes are recommended for workers that work in environments where the temperature varies between -5 °C and 18 °C accompanied by showers and strong winds. This rainwear keeps workers dry during heavy rains because PVC is absolutely non-porous; it is, however, absolutely not breathable which may cause a sauna effect through perspiration. One must thus choose wisely what to wear underneath according to the efforts required.
Maintenance:
This raincoat should always be machine-washed in a delicate setting with cold or lukewarm water, and a gentle soap. Never use bleaching agents or fabric softeners on this coat. It should also be air-dried in a sheltered spot out of direct sunlight. Never tumble dry, iron or dry clean this raincoat. The manufacturer ensures that this coat has a service life of twenty-five wash.
