Peakwork's 6' (1.8 m) long self-retracting lifeline or personal fall arrester (PFA). Designed for workers in electrical environments. It offers protection against electric arcs commonly known as Arc Flash. The strap of this retractable is made of aramid, a material resistant to intense heat.

Peakwork product code: V845682006AR, model # SRL-76105-6LEAR.
This product complies with ANSI Z359.14-2014 and CSA Z259.2.2-2017.

Arcing occurs when electricity passes through the air between two points of charge. When an arc occurs, it is attracted to metal parts of harnesses, such as the back D-ring and attachment loops, which can result in burns and serious injury to the worker.

By using a retractable lifeline as well as other protective equipment with the Arc Flash feature, workers can work safely in high-risk electrical environments, while benefiting from reliable and durable protective equipment.

This model is not designed for horizontal applications. Therefore, it can only be used with vertical anchor points. As a result, it does not protect against sharp edges. The strap is made of Aramid, a material known for its resistance to heat. It also complies with the ASTM F887 standard. This lifeline is equipped with an internal energy absorber. This protection is subject to the conditions of use described in the user's manual.

Strap dimensions:

Thickness: 0.07 in (1.75 mm)
Width: 0.8 in (20 mm)
Length: 6 ft (1.828 m)

This type of equipment has the advantage of replacing regular lanyards, as their stopping distance is reduced. This self-retracting lanyard is equipped with two carabiners: a standard carabiner with a 7/8" (22.22 mm) opening and a semi-automatic carabiner (with rotating ring) with a 3/4" (19 mm) opening. The carabiners are self-locking and unlock with a double action.

This personal fall limiter with a vertical  anchor can support a worker weighing 310 lb (136 kg), including clothing, tools and equipment.

During a fall, the fall distance varies depending on the anchor arrangement. The maximum stopping distance is 19" (0.50 m) with a vertical anchor point. These values represent (DD) the deployment value of the connecting device indicated in the free fall distance calculation diagram. Its braking mechanism combined with the energy absorber will limit the forces exerted on the falling worker. For a worker weighing a maximum of 310 lb, the stopping forces will be 4.12 kN (928 lbf). Once the strap is deployed, the strap overload indicator will appear. It is possible to have it repaired by the manufacturer, however, for this type of model it is preferable to replace it.

The carabiners (hooks) are made of steel and are capable of withstanding a force of 3600 lb (16 kN) without deforming.

The housing is made of impact-resistant aluminum and corrosion resistant parts. The lightweight devices can be mounted on the worker's harness for greater freedom and range of motion. The enclosure is approved for use in horizontal or vertical applications, hence the Class B certification. In addition, it has an integrated rotating swivel that prevents the strap from twisting. Its total weight is 6 lb (2.8 kg).

The self-retracting lanyard has a certification label on the housing. In addition, an instructional label is affixed to the housing to increase understanding of the conditions of use.

Regarding the anchor point and free fall distance:

The anchor point should be located at a mandatory level above the back loop of the harness and should be positioned vertically in relation to the user. The worker should remain below the anchor point so that he/she remains within a perimeter of no more than a 30-degree angle.

It cannot be used in a horizontal configuration, i.e., the anchor point may be lower than the back ring. It does not have external anti-shock units for protection of sharp slope edges. So if there are unprotected sharp edges, they will need to be secured. The radius of the edge must be greater than or equal to 0.010" (0.25 mm). This is regularly found on rolled steel profiles, wood beams or on rounded paneling.

It is important that the user be aware of the risks of a possible fall. Among other things, is there a sufficient distance free of obstacles below the worker? Are there emergency measures to recover quickly? Can the anchor point withstand a force of 5000 lb? For more information, consult the manufacturer's manual.

Inspection:

The worker is responsible for performing a routine inspection before each use. During this routine inspection, the worker should observe any signs of deterioration, wear, malfunction or breakage. You must replace your equipment at the first sign of failure.

In addition, this retractable should be inspected by a qualified person other than the worker. The required frequency of these inspections varies by manufacturers. Some prescribe every 90 days, other every 180 days, or even annually.

Keep in mind that the more difficult the work and environmental conditions, the more often your equipment will need to be inspected. The recommended life span of a lanyard is 5 years. Some manufacturers are silent on the subject, but in practice, a retractable used regularly and neglected in terms of storage or maintenance will not have a long life. On average, their lifespan will not exceed 5 years.

Sylprotec offers an inspection service for lanyards and safety harnesses. For self-retracting lanyards, we offer this service through the manufacturer. However, due to their low cost, they are discarded in case of breakage or wear. Find out more by clicking on the Services tab, under the Sylprotec logo at the top of the page.

Suggestion:

To complete your fall protection you will find a range of harness and anchors. Some products are suggested under the "accessories" tab at the bottom of this page.
